On the third Friday of February, it is National Caregivers Day. It is a day to honor the healthcare professionals in the United States for providing long-term and hospice care.

For us, it is a very important day of recognition. As caregivers ourselves, we want to recognize the effort and sacrifices of our fellow caregivers who selflessly give their time to care for those in need, those who are ill, disabled, and elderly.

This day of recognition is for anybody who is a caregiver, paid and unpaid. We believe unpaid caregivers deserve just as much credit as professional ones, like ourselves. They silently go about their tasks and support someone in need who often is their family member. We know how hard it is and we want to recognize all caregivers regardless of their status.

National Caregivers Day

The first observance of this day occurred in 2016. The Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies dedicated this day to all caregivers nationwide in 2015. In 2016, the National Day Calendar Proclaimed that this day should be observed every third Friday in February every year.

Observing National Caregivers Day

Most caregivers do not seek or expect any form of recognition. We do what we do, because it needs to be done, and it is the right thing to do.

A simple “Thank You” to all the caregivers you know goes a long way.

You can send them a card in the mail or you can simply email them and send them a short message. They will appreciate it tremendously.

Other things you can do to appreciate your caregivers:

  • Give them a day off.
  • Take over the role of caring.

If you are an Adult Family Home or a nursing facility, you can make up recognition certificates to show your appreciation to your caregivers.

  • Let them know with a kind word of encouragement. Your recognition will inspire them to continue their quality work.
  • Tell their supervisor how much you appreciate the services.
  • Compliments are rarely voiced. Take the time to make yours heard.
  • Provide a special appreciation luncheon to your employees
